Season Two: Raising the Bar

Season Two started the way Season One ended; each show seemed like it was better than the last. It was apparent that the MST3K cast and writing staff had found its groove as everything about the show seemed to get better. The riffs were better, the host segments were better, the types of movies they did diversified, and "X Marks the Spot" was unveiled as the first stand-alone short; a staple in the series. Change was even more apparent with the introduction of Frank, a new voice for Tom, and a remodeled SOL. Surely, this was just the start of something good. Even though things were better across the board in Season Two, they would get better still.

Season Rank and Reflections

Andrew's Rank:

# 6

Mstie Rank:

# 9
Decent stats for this season, which puts it in the middle of the pack and the two enshrined shows near the end help it quite a bit. However, let's not underemphasize the importance of this season from a growth standpoint. This was the true breakout season for the show. I think a major turning point was show 206: Ring of Terror as that was the first show that felt like the "new" MST3K. And, while I appreciate everything Josh Weinstein did for the show, Kevin Murphy brought the perfect personality for the short, red, fireplug Tom Servo.

RPMs (Riffs Per Minute)

RPMs shot up like a rocket for the first part of Season Two, peaking with 210: King Dinosaur which had an amazing RPM of 11.1, the first of only three shows in the entire series to have an RPM that high. This brought the RPM average up to around 10. This dramatic rise in RPMs would never be repeated and the RPM level would remain at this relative level until late in Season Eight.

This episode has sentimental value to me. When I decided to start beefing up my MST3K collection, I started with season two and this is one of the first shows from that season I chose to watch. It confirmed that I was engaged in a worthwhile task and I couldn't wait to watch more episodes. Also, it earns major brownie points with such a high RPM. There's nothing that Joel and the bots don't riff on!

This episode fascinated me the first time I watched it. Here was a movie that was actually pretty good. Granted, the production values were kind of low, but what a great story in the target movie alone. The riffing might be slow but what's there is clever. Also, that fever-dream "Klack" host segment still intrigues me. What is Klack? Who are they making fun of? Did Tom really just say what I thought he said? That's disgusting, yet hilarious!

Movie:
This movie tries to popularize a new sport, Sidehacking. Ross Hagen plays Rommel, a sidehacker with a good job in a bike repair shop, a great fiance, great friends, and a great pastime. Then he meets J.C., an eccentric and mentally unstable rich guy who takes an interest in sidehacking and Rommel himself. Rommel refuses to become part of J.C.'s posse and also refuses the advances of J.C.'s girlfriend, Paisley. Paisley tells J.C. that Rommel tried to rape her. So J.C. orders the beating of Rommel and his fiance, who dies in the process. Rommel puts together a band of punks to find J.C. and have a good old-fashioned rumble. J.C. kills Paisley and brings guns to the knife fight and the groups kill each other, except for J.C. and Rommel who beat each other up. But J.C. shoots and kills Rommel and J.C. lays there in pain, awaiting the approaching sirens. So, there's no real justice and the hero dies. A very disgusting movie. Fave character: Rommel's level-headed friend Luke who tries to talk Rommel out of his rampage.

Little Richard tastefully requested the omission of his name from the poster. Can the shark eat the movie reels, too?

Characters:

Movie:
A light-hearted beach romp is this movie, starring Tommy Kirk of Disney fame and many scantily clad beach babes shaking it to Little Richard. I haven't decided if this movie tries too hard to be funny or it's just not funny period. Don (Tommy) and Bob are visiting Bob's home on Catalina. Bob is a chick magnet, literally!, and shows Don the ropes. They meet another young buck, Tad, whose parents seem a "tad" (get it?) odd and, according to Tad, are looking for trouble. He's right. His parents steal a scroll from a museum, and make an exact copy with the intent of selling the copy to a Greek mob kingpin for $500K and returning the original to the museum. But there's trouble during the exchange and the container with the scroll falls into the ocean. The parents hold a diving party for the teens to find it and evil divers with knives assault the teens underwater. The coast guard moves in to straighten it all out and arrest Tad's father for stealing the scroll. But the scroll container is empty! To protect his parents, Tad puts the scroll back in the museum. Then everyone dances. The end. This movie is tingly with teens hooking up and dancing in swimwear. Little Richard sings a song and there's some comic relief guy who has NOTHING to do with the movie. Fave character: Creepy girl!

Is it okay if I panic AFTER the rocket strikes? We'd better be the ones doing the rocketing.

Characters:

Movie:
Another movie that preys on the nuclear arms scare. It is about a secret agent who is sent to Russia to obtain information about the Russians' plans to build and launch nuclear weapons. He does this by hiding in the closet of his female Russian contact who is the "lady friend", hint hint, of a Russian diplomat who often gets drunk and spills the beans. In the meantime back in the States, panic ensues and everyone braces for the worst. The agent and the lady fall in love and go together to disarm the nuclear missile. Happy ending? Nope. The lady is shot by Russian troops and the agent is shot on his way back to tell her that he successfully planted a bomb to blow up the missile. That plan fails as well as the bomb is removed from the missile. The movie ends with the missile landing in New York, killing millions. However, as the movie mentions, the suburbs are unaffected. Huh?! Really a downer with bad characters including a British ally who sounds like he's from Kansas. Fave character: The American General for realizing the danger and readying the country.

Hahaha! Fat people dancing. Hahahaha!! Just add rice and the correct seasoning and you've got a wonderful meal.

Characters:

Movie:
This very dark and dreary movie is the ninety minute version of a popular campfire ghost story, so there's a whole lot of padding. We start by taking a tour through a morgue and meet an old guy with a cat named Puma. He waxes poetic about death before stepping on Puma who runs out into the graveyard. The guy follows him and calls to him about a million times. The cat ends up on the grave of Louis Moffit and when the guy picks up Puma, he remembers the name and tells us his story. Louis was a promising medical student who was legendary for being afraid of nothing. Not snakes, and certainly not his girlfriend who hates him for being so cocky all of the time. One night he and his med student buddies attend an autopsy which he begs to assist with. Other students lose their lunch but Louis stands tall and proud. Later, at a frat barbecue, Louis receives his hazing assignment which is to break into the morgue and steal the gold ring from the body they just autopsied. He does, but gets trapped in the morgue and dies, gasp, of fright. We come back from the flashback and see Louie's funeral procession. The end. A very hollow movie with college students in their 30's and a shameful portrayal of fat people. Fave character: Puma! Puma? Puma. Puma! Puma! Puma? Puma.

There are five people on this poster. Who's that other guy?! That sounds like a great video game! Notice the bizarre, alien fauna of Nova.

Characters:

Tom: "I think the film on this lake is better than the film we're watching."

Dick

: Zoologist and voyage leader. Doesn't take any crap and seems unconcerned with alien surroundings.

Nora

: Geologist who determines the planet's age as "prehistoric." Friendly and tough but will scream when necessary.

Ralph

: Doctor who winds up severely injured after he wanders away from camp at night on a strange planet with no flashlight to neck with his girlfriend.

Pat

: Very blond chemist who wanders off with Ralph and stands there screaming as he is mauled by an alligator.

Joey the lemur

: A lemur whose name is Joey.

Joel: "Tom, if you're looking for plausibility, you won't find it here, friend."

Movie:
This movie embodies everything that a 1950's, black and white, space exploration, mutant monster, technological expose` movie aspired to be. The first 10 hours or so focus on how NASA strives to "develop, improve, create, invent" ways to prove that mice can survive in space and if you drop a plane from 20 feet up the wings snap off. All to aid in the mission of sending 4 humans to a newly discovered planet named "Nova". "Nova", of course, is Latin for "Wisconsin". When our foursome arrive on the planet, they find strange and alien life forms including bears, elk, and birds. Then they trek off into the unknown, fearing neither alligator nor 2-story wasp nor an even larger super-imposed iguana. But why should they when they have their trusty atomic bomb with a blast radius of a half-mile or so to rid them of said menaces? I really love this episode. Fave character: Joey the lemur, the friend to mankind.

Reflections:

Movie: "There is no margin for error."

Crow: "There is a margin for shame, however."

This was one of the first episodes I saw when I first dabbled in "tape trading". It proved to me that collecting Mst3k episodes was a very worthwhile task. This episode was everything I thought Mst3k was and ever wanted it to be; bad older movies and plentiful riffing. Enshrinement ease: No-brainer.

Movie: "I brought the atom bomb. I think it's a good time to use it."

Tom: "Oh, that's your answer to everything."

Omega

Prof. Orlaff

: Physicist. He hates losing to Omega.

Prof. Tchen Yu & Dr. Sikarna

: Linguists who spend most of the mission trying to figure out the Venusian language and how they communicate. Tchen Yu finds seeds on the surface and manages to grow them.

Talua

: The ship's navigator and pilot.

Joel: "Why's there a bent coat hanger on the rearview? Is that foreshadowing?"

Movie:
The twistaroo at the end of this movie is actually kind of cool, but the movie as a whole is somewhat flawed. A meteorite is found and examined by a language expert who discovers that the rock actually contains the Earth's periodic table. Other scientists discover that the rock came from Venus. What's a rock from Venus doing inscribed with our table of elements? So off we go! A group of 9 scientists fly to Venus to make contact with the Venusians. But no one seems to be home. They discover that the Venusians all died in a tremendous nuclear explosion that resulted from them attempting to harness nuclear energy and bombard the Earth with it to achieve extermination and colonization. Take that, you jerks! Our heroes are forced to leave the planet when they radiate a lake of poop which changes it into energy, repelling the ship from Venus. The theories are pretty unbelievable, but at least the captain's hair is never out of place. Fave character: All- terrain robot pal Omega.

Reflections:

Sikarna: "Their weapons got out of their control."

Tom: "As did their bowels."

I love this episode because it is a good "white noise" episode. The movie itself is great stuff and even though the riffing is a bit slow, I still like to put this one in whenever I can. Enshrinement ease: Easy.

Yutaka Hayashi as Oscar Wilde. Trippy! Don't bring New York into this.
And Gigan and Jet Jaguar! You've seen this, right?

Characters:

Movie:
Megalon: A giant roach with drilling arms shaped like the Chrysler building, antennae that shoot beams, and grenade egg things. The title bout is actually not the title bout. Instead, this movie focuses on a sub aquatic race of people who resurface, bent on destruction because we keep testing nukes underwater. They hijack a very powerful robot, Jet Jaguar, created by one of Japan's greatest robotics designers and his brat child and/or little brother. The sea people awaken Megalon and use the robot to guide Megalon on a tour of destruction through Japan. But the inventor regains control of the robot, telling it to fly to Monster Island and bring Godzilla to stop Megalon. That happens, but Godzilla gets his butt kicked. In a panic, Jet Jaguar increases his size to that of Megalon's and assists Godzilla. To compensate for this, the sea people send Gigan to help Megalon. A Godzilla-style "rubber suits with wires" brawl ensues and GZ and Jet emerge victorious. Then Godzilla returns to Monster Island and Jet Jaguar returns to normal size. Mothra brings appetizers. Might as well start preparing the drawn butter.

Characters:

Movie:
Sea Monster: A large lobster type monster with one regular claw for crunching and a straight claw for impaling. Our story starts with 3 youths attempting to raise money to buy a boat to search for a lost brother. Finally they just decide to steal one. Much to the chagrin of the owner who agrees to let them spend the night on the boat, during which one of them casts off. Turns out the owner is not the owner but a convict hiding out. Anyway, a storm maroons them on an island. They stumble on a factory where bad guys make, um, stuff. The bad guys must spray sea monster repellant in the water to move safely to and from the island. They have enslaved the natives to help with this. The group purposely awakens Godzilla to distract the bad guys so they can save the natives and hope G'zilla will destroy the factory. He does, dispatches the Sea Monster, and jumps into the ocean before the island explodes. Oh, and Mothra, who is the natives' god, rescues the people from the island by carrying them away.
